But by that time, Marlin's top seller was being tanned by a number of acoustics, Young Chang's Fenix Strat Copy (predictably), Fender's MIJ Special Strat, Fender's American Standard Strat, and of course the then untouchable number one - the Korean Squier Strat.

It was dated June, 1932. Remember that during the depression, things might set around in the factory, sometimes incomplete, for a while waiting on someone who had the money. In my opinion this accounts for the occasional pre-1932 guitar, etc. With a decal.' Despite the prevalence of the 1988 adverts (the Sidewinder also had its own dedicated ad), the power of Fender’s Korean Squiers proved impossible to overturn at that time, and the Marlin gear slipped down the sales charts. By 1989, British Music Strings had ceased UK distribution of the Marlins, and Hohner had taken over, even branding themselves in, presumably in an attempt to pitch Marlin as a sort of budget superbrand. The ad to the left comes from mid 1989 and shows a completely new range of instruments in which the ‘Strat’ is no longer strictly a Fender copy, and range-wide changes have taken place, including the dropping of the characteristic twelfth fret fish inlay, and drastic revision of the headstock shapes. But even the combined might of the Hohner and Marlin brands was not enough to reassert the success of the guitars in what was now a very different environment. In the Sidewinder’s heyday of 1986, there was nothing comparable to the Marlins in terms of value and image, but by ’89 Korean manufacture had been adopted by more powerful brands, and the likes of – source of the Korean Squiers – were offering with solid wood bodies and considerably higher quality than that associated with Marlin. Additionally, of course, the kind of features which defined the ’88 Marlin range were going rapidly out of fashion by the end of the decade, and Marlin was unable to trade on past glory.

Trapeze style bridge. Made only during the 1930s. • Flattop: a flat top to the guitar, and a single round sound hole under the strings. Pin style bridge. Flat Top Guitar Body Size.

Notice also how all of the Marlin instruments in this ad have body-matching headstocks. MARLIN LONER The £169 Marlin K38KT Loner was similar in concept to the Stingray, although it had a different body shape and a pointy, rather than traditional Strat-style headstock.

Actually, the “harrowing” bit is just me being irreverent and melodramatic. Whilst the Marlin Sidewinder was an object lesson in cost-cutting and basically polishing poop, most people seemed to get on reasonably well with it. Indeed, the Sidewinder wasn’t only the UK's number one seller in 1986; the success continued through 1987, and the instrument was still being reported as sales chart-topper in spring 1988.

Especially given that the Blue Fin’s price also included a gig bag, the guitar was pretty evidently a tier below the rest of the range in terms of budget. MARLIN SIDEWINDER I’ve covered this model in depth in its own article, but I should draw attention to the Sidewinder Bass (Model KB34), which is also depicted in this advert, and came priced at £129 in a choice of five colours.

For example, the PB-26 pickup (Pictured Left) is the same pickup used in the Teisco May Queen, but a single bar magnet is used. The pickup for the PA-18 (picture left) is the same size and shape as the EP-8T, but with a large opening and black plastic infill. The roller bridge used multiple grove rollers to enable adjust to the string spacing.

Diptrace full version serial keys. I have a marlin sidewinder and personally i have not a clue what u r on about if you know what you are doing its a pretty f**ing good guitar.

MARLIN BLUE FIN The Blue Fin was a roughly vee-bodied rock machine featuring two humbuckers, a locking trem and a maple neck. Priced at £139 it was the cheapest of the advertised guitars. There’s no stipulation that the pickups are wax-potted, so I suspect this cheaper instrument used pickups more typical of the Korean output of the day. Especially given that the Blue Fin’s price also included a gig bag, the guitar was pretty evidently a tier below the rest of the range in terms of budget. I forgot about it! The instrument has only been played a few times, it was bought for one of our daughters who shortly afterwards went to Uni, and sadly gave up the guitar. I have recently retired, am again having 'Classical' lessons with my old Tutor, mentioned this Marlin to him, and he suggested I take it along to my next lesson for him to 'look at.' .so, here we are! Thank you for your time and a very Merry Christmas! 2013 £170 good Morgan.

I've got a Marlin LONER left handed. The guitars were marketed by BMS but I am lead to believe were built by Samick. They are heavy for a ply body, but the quality is pretty good for a cheapish guitar. I'm dubious about the £400 tag you mention, I can remember seeing them in a shop for around £100 in the early eighties. BTW: I believe they were only made in the eighties and the style is certainly of that era. I picked one up in excellen condition about 12 years ago for £75.

As you can see, Martin did not make very many guitars for other companies. So the chance that your non-Martin guitar is really a 'Martin' is very unlikely! Martin Serial Numbers (How to Find the Year). All Martin guitars since 1898 (except solidbody electrics from the 1970s, basses, and tiples) are numbered in consecutive order. Ukuleles do not have serial numbers. Mandolins use a different serial number system than guitars. Martin guitar serial numbers start at 8000 in 1898 because Martin estimated they made 8000 instruments before 1898.

I bought a Marlin Sidewinder as my first ever electric guitar in 1985. A mate of mine who was an excellent player suggested it to me as a decent budget guitar to learn on. Over 20 years later I still have it propped up next to my Rickenbackers. It was a top of the range Sidewinder (if ever there was such a thing) with floating bridge, tremelo arm, locking nut and allen key holder on the reverse of the headstock. I think it cost in the region of £250 though I'm not sure what the RRP was back then. I always liked it and it played fine although scorn was inevitably poured upon both me and the guitar when I went to jam with mates who all owned Gibsons and Fenders or at least reasonable well known copies. As I never really wanted the tremelo I removed it and tensioned the floating bridge so that it basically became fixed.

There are many factors that can affect the value of your vintage guitar. Some of those include variables such as refinished bodies or necks, replaced parts, refrets, and overall condition of the guitar. Original and mint condition will catch the highest values for your instruments. If the guitar has been altered, it can depreciate the value of the guitar tremendously.

I love it, apart from mine is a metallic red colour which I'm not too made up about. :I recall the guitaris in an old band of mine, having a Marlin Sidewinder. It was by far the most horrible thing ive ever had the misfortune to try and sing along with.Wouldnt staay in tune, had a pointless tremelo etc.YEEEUCCH! Horrid thing!

On round hole martin guitars, the serial and model numbers are stamped on the neck block inside the instrument. The number can be seen by looking inside the sound hole. Look at an angle towards the neck. All f-hole Martin archtops have their serial and model numbers stamped on the inside center of the backstripe, roughly under the shadow of the bridge (and best seen from the bass side 'f' hole). The numbers listed here show the LAST serial number produced for that year.

His advice was that, unless I was seriously gonna shell out a lot of dosh for a US Strat just for the prestige, I should choose tha Marlin (with twin blade humbucker) instead of the Squier. This I duly did, handed over £150 and I'm still playing the guitar today. Have kept it in original nick apart from a new pickup selector switch last year due to crackle. I've just read that it was the UK's best selling Strat copy for 2 years in the mid-eighties. I'm not sure what the more recent Marlins are like, but I'm looking at building up a collection of 80's Marlins. I bought my Sidewinder Bass from a charity shop in Scotland for £40.00. In 2001 and I had never heard of this brand before.
